Book Summary:

The nascent commercial suborbital spaceflight industry will soon open the space frontier to commercial astronauts, payload specialists, scientists and of course, tourists. This book describes the tantalizing science opportunities to be offered when suborbital trips become routine within the next 12 to 18 months. It describes the difference in training and qualification necessary to become either a spaceflight participant or a fully-fledged commercial suborbital astronaut and it describes the vehicles this new class of astronauts will use. Anticipation is on the rise for the new crop of commercial suborbital spaceships that will serve the scientific and educational market. These reusable rocket-propelled vehicles are expected to offer quick, routine and affordable access to the edge of space along with the capability to carry research and educational crew members. Yet to be demonstrated is the hoped-for flight rates of suborbital vehicles. Quick turnaround of these craft is central to realizing the profit-making potential of repeated sojourns to suborbital heights. As this book outlines, vehicle builders still face rigorous shake-out schedules, flight safety hurdles as well as extensive trial-runs of their respective craft before suborbital space jaunts become commonplace. The book examines some of these ‘cash and carry’ suborbital craft under development by such groups as Blue Origin, Masten Space Systems, Virgin Galactic and XCOR Aerospace and describes the hurdles the space industry is quickly overcoming en-route to the industry developing into a profitable economic entity. Seedhouse also explains how the commercial suborbital spaceflight industry is planning and preparing for the challenges of marketing and financing and how it is marketing the hiring of astronauts. It examines the role of commercial operators as enablers accessing the suborbital frontier and how a partnership with governments and the private sector will eventually permanently integrate the free market’s innovation of commercial suborbital space activities.

Book Summary:

Stratospheric balloons are powerful tools used to study the Earth and its atmosphere, as well as the greater cosmos beyond. This book describes the science and technology behind modern stratospheric ballooning, along with the surprising ways it has impacted our daily lives. The book takes you through every step of the process, starting with an in-depth introduction to basic balloon types and their uses before delving into balloon construction and mission planning. Along the way, you will learn about the novel technologies that have radically changed these balloons and their ability to launch, control and navigate them over specific ground targets. Next follows an exploration of their incredible applications, including research in atmospheric science, cosmology and astronomy, earth studies, meteorology, and aerobiology, and also commercial capabilities such as Internet networks and high-altitude tourism. The community of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs involved in stratospheric ballooning is only ever growing. This book shows you how these national and international efforts have truly soared in recent years, and it will be an enjoyable read for anybody interested in learning more about how science and commerce are conducted in the stratosphere, at the edge of space.

Book Summary:

In the era of Concorde, flying aboard this iconic aircraft was like being part of an elite club. Flying at the edge of space, seeing the curvature of the earth as well as jetting off to exotic locations on private charters were just normal parts of the job for Concorde employees. Sally Armstrong recounts her experiences as a stewardess flying with the rich and famous, meeting the superstars and royals, and ensuring their memories of flying on these special journeys were as special as they could be. Reflecting on Concorde's near 30 years of service, from the heady beginnings to the tragic Air France Crash in 2001, the author also considers the important work of the Save Concorde Group. This book commemorates a unique era of flying with all the adventure, glamour and glitz that it entailed.

Book Summary:

DescriptionMy book is about a journey about myself who used to live with various mental health problems and I now manage them so I can lead a successful healthy family lifestyle. It is a collection of poems I have written from the age of 16 to 30 (present). I thought my problems were quite normal and therefore just got on with life, but it was in 2009 when I thought crossing over to the spirit world would be painless and I could be on a cloud forever. I knew this was not quite right so I decided I wanted to manage my mental health issues. About the AuthorI was born in 1979 live in County Durham. I have suffered from mental health issues since leaving school in 1996 such as bulimia, IBS, seasonal affective disorder and sexual identity crisis. After graduating from University in Bristol I was a summer camp counsellor in New York and then travelled to the Far East. During this period I self-harmed and drank alcohol to forget my problems and I ended up in hospital on three occasions for self-harm. I went to the GP in 2008 and had different medication tried on me. In 2009 I was advised to go into a mental hospital as I wanted to cross over to the spirit world. Here I was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder and depression and it was then when I decided to accept, manage and live with my problems.I now lead a healthy-happy family life where I compete in triathlon, duathlon, aquathon, have finished a marathon. Recently I have been told I have a little arthritis in my back and I now try to base my lifestyle around this, with swimming and strengthening. I have raised money for mental health charities and have been in the local media about beating depression by running. I plan to continue with this in the future, especially local campaigns. I want to be an inspiration to people who suffer from mental health issues.
