ISBN | 9780817641719 |

Book Summary:
The impetus for current research in pro-p groups comes from four main directions: from new applications in number theory, which continue to be a source of deep and challenging problems; from the traditional problem of classifying finite p-groups; from questions arising in infinite group theory; and finally, from the younger subject of 'profinite group theory'. A correspondingly diverse range of mathematical techniques is being successfully applied, leading to new results and pointing to exciting new directions of research. In this work important theoretical developments are carefully presented by leading mathematicians in the field, bringing the reader to the cutting edge of current research. With a systematic emphasis on the construction and examination of many classes of examples, the book presents a clear picture of the rich universe of pro-p groups, in its unity and diversity. Thirty open problems are discussed in the appendix. For graduate students and researchers in group theory, number theory, and algebra, this work will be an indispensable reference text and a rich source of promising avenues for further exploration.

Lectures on Groups and Vector Spaces for Physicists by C. J. Isham

Book Summary:
These notes are the contents of a lecture course given to third year physics undergraduates at the Imperial College who are taking the theoretical physics option. The subject of ?Algebra and Groups? is of considerable importance in a number of branches of modern theoretical physics, and therefore one major objective of the course is to introduce the students to the basic ideas on the subject, bearing in mind the potential applications to quantum theory. However, another equally important aim of the course is to introduce the student to the art of genuine ?mathematical? thinking. The notes are therefore written in a more precise mathematical style than is usually the case in courses aimed at physics students. Quite apart from the general educational value of such an exposure to abstract thinking, it is also the case that much modern theoretical physics draws on sophisticated ideas from pure mathematics and therefore it is most important that a perspective graduate student can approach these subjects without experiencing a total culture shock! The course is divided into three parts. The first is a short introduction to general group theory, with particular emphasis being placed on the matrix Lie groups that play such a crucial role in modern theoretical physics. The second part deals with the theory of vector spaces, with particular attention being paid to the theory of Hilbert spaces and the basic analytical techniques that are needed to handle the infinite dimensional situation. The final part of the course is a short introduction to the theory of group representations and the associated theory of characters.

Book Summary:
This book is a comprehensive pedagogical presentation of the theory of representation of finite and compact Lie groups that would be of interest to research mathematicians and graduate students interested in group theory and generalizations, topological groups, and Lie groups. Representation theory is discussed on finite groups of rotations, permutation groups, and classical compact Lie groups. The Weyl character formula is proved.
EBOOK E Learning Groups and Communities by David McConnell

Book Summary:
This book outlines approaches to networked e-learning course design that are underpinned by a belief that students learn best in these contexts when they are organised in groups and communities. As such, the book is one of the first to provide a detailed analysis of what goes on in e-learning groups and communities.

Book Summary:
Research on small groups is highly diverse because investigators who study such groups vary in their disciplinary identifications, theoretical interests, and methodological preferences. The goal of this volume is to capture that diversity, and thereby convey the breadth and excitement of small group research by acquainting students with work on five fundamental aspects of groups. The volume also includes an introductory chapter by the editors which provides an overview of the history of and current state-of-the-art in the field. Together with introductions to each section, discussion questions and suggestions for further reading, make the volume ideal reading for senior undergraduate and graduate students interested in group dynamics.

Book Summary:
In this introductory text, the author presents the law relating to child care and the reforms introduced by the Children Act 1989, assessing its impact on child care practice and procedures. Focusing on a practical interpretation of the law by the use of hypothetical examples, practice notes and recommendations, the book illustrates its relevance to those working in the caring and health professions, and incorporates details of various sets of Guidance and Regualtions issued by the Department of Health. In addition it provides an outline of adoption law, the principles of consent to treatment and the effect of surrogacy and "assisted reproduction" on the legal definition of parenthood.
