Single, thirty and living on a farm in a small Western Australian town, she's sick of being treated like a kitchen slave by her brother and father. Ten years ago, her mother died of breast cancer, and Faith has been treading water ever since. She wants to prove to herself that she's done something worthwhile with her life. And she wants to find a man... For as long as he can remember, Daniel 'Monty' Montgomery has been Faith's best friend. When he was ten, his parents sold the family property and moved to Perth and ever since, Monty's dreamed of having his own farm. So for the last ten years, he's been back on the land, working odd jobs and saving every dollar to put toward his dream. Now he finally has the deposit. But there's still something missing... So when Faith embarks on a mission to raise money for a charity close to her heart, and Monty's dream property comes on the market, things seem like they are falling into place for them both. Until a drunken night out ends with them sleeping together. Suddenly, the best friends are faced with a new load of challenges... Monty and Faith are both ready to find a life partner and settle down, but they didn't expect love to be so close by.

Book Summary:

"What we see, and what we seem, are but a dream, a dream within a dream." Michael Bliss views Miranda's voice-over at the beginning of Picnic at Hanging Rock as so pivotal in explaining the films of Peter Weir that he borrows her words to create the title of his own study of the Australian filmmaker's work. Bliss views Weir as an artist whose values are rooted in the realm of the dream, of the unconscious. Surrealistic in technique, Weir avoids the pedestrian assurances of a material realm in favor of an irresolution that, while potentially frustrating, is nonetheless for him a more truthful representation of what he considers reality. For Weir, as for Plato, Bliss demonstrates, "empirical reality is nothing more than a shadow of what is real." Bliss also considers Weir's heritage. Australian cinema, Bliss explains, is characterized by melodramatic narratives born of a desire to see good and evil portrayed in striking opposition. Weir, for example, dramatizes the contradictory forces of light versus darkness, reason versus mystery, and rationality versus magic in such films as Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Last Wave. This melodramatic emphasis is evident as well in the polarized characterizations in such films as Witness, Dead Poets Society, and The Truman Show. Bliss also discusses Weir's use of another staple of Australian cinema-- "mateship," the celebration of the bond between male companions. But by making self-knowledge dependent on action involving one's friends, Weir gives mateship a new meaning. Moreover, like other Australian filmmakers, Weir emphasizes the starkness of the Australian landscape, which functions either as a hazard or a deadly challenge, at least until American mythology caused him to see nature in a more positive light. Also prominent in Weir's films is an Australian spirit of rebellion coupled with the Aussie ambivalence toward all aspects of British culture. To help explain Weir's films, Bliss looks to Freud and Jung, whom Weir has studied, and also to two other prominent purveyors of myth and archetype, Northrop Frye and Joseph Campbell. Virtually all Weir characters struggle toward a new mode of awareness, a psychological awareness based on archetypal truths. Many of his films involve archetypal journeys heading through conflict to spiritual unity. Weir's quest is to find out what we really know and how we know what we know.

Book Summary:

At the time of his death in 2013, Roger Ebert was arguably the most influential writer about movies in the United States. He had been film critic for the "Chicago Sun-Times" for over 45 years, reviewing more movies than any other critic active during that time and pioneering in both television reporting and reviewing. In 1975 he was the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for criticism. Among the film directors who started working at about the same time Ebert started writing for the "Sun-Times," two inspired a particularly intense devotion. One was Martin Scorsese, the subject of "Scorsese by Ebert" (published in 2008). The other was Werner Herzog--Ebert first saw one of his films at the New York Film Festival in 1968. This volume gathers together all Ebert's reviews of individual films (as well as longer pieces he wrote for "The Great Movies" series), free-wheeling interviews, and essays in which he discusses various aspects of Herzog's achievement. It also includes a longer interview/discussion with Herzog at Facet's Multimedia in 1979 ("Images at the Horizon"), which offers fascinating details about Herzog's early career. Herzog himself has contributed a Foreword in which he discusses their long relationship. As one of the readers of the manuscript noted, "'Herzog by Ebert' documents a unique and productive relationship between a filmmaker and a film critic. Anyone who watches Herzog's films will surely benefit from Ebert's insights." It will be an essential book for all who admire Herzog's (and Ebert's) work.

When Sonja receives news that the evil vampire lord Sir Morgan is behind a string of murders of women found wearing sunglasses and leather jackets, she abandons her “family” for New York City. Once she is face-to-face with Morgan, will she finally be able to destroy him once and for all? Or will she succumb to the darkness within her and become his queen?
