Book Summary:

Melding facts with fiction, Misfit is a fascinating exploration of the many personas of Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn Monroe is one of the most iconic figures in the history of Hollywood, and her legendary work on the big screen is eclipsed only perhaps by the lengend of her life off it. Adam Braver’s Misfit centers on the last weekend of Monroe’s life, which she spent at Frank Sinatra’s resort, the Cal Neva Lodge, in Lake Tahoe. Melding facts with fiction, Braver takes moments throughout Monroe’s life—her childhood, her marriages with Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller, her studies with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, and her role in The Misfits, the film Miller wrote for her—and explores how they informed her tragic end.

Book Summary:

NOW UPDATED WITH A NEW EPILOGUE In the summer of 1964, aged twenty, Ray Davies led the Kinks to fame with their number one hit ‘You Really Got Me’. Within months, they were established among the pop elite, swamped by fans and fast becoming renowned for the rioting at their gigs. But Ray’s journey from working-class Muswell Hill to the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame was tumultuous in the extreme, featuring breakdowns, bitter lawsuits, spectacular punch-ups and a ban from entering the USA. His relationship with his brother Dave is surely the most ferocious and abusive in music history. Based on countless interviews conducted over several decades, this richly detailed and revelatory biography presents the most frank and intimate portrait yet of Ray Davies.

Book Summary:

A book that argues that lessons in creativity, innovation, salesmanship, and entrepreneurship can come from surprising places: pirates, bootleggers, counterfeiters, hustlers, and others living and working on the margins of business and society. Who are the greatest innovators in the world? You're probably thinking Steve Jobs, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford. The usual suspects. This book isn't about them. It's about people you've never heard of. It's about people who are just as innovative, entrepreneurial, and visionary as the Jobses, Edisons, and Fords of the world. They’re in the crowded streets of Shenzhen, the prisons of Somalia, the flooded coastal towns of Thailand. They are pirates, computer hackers, pranksters, and former gang leaders. Across the globe, diverse innovators operating in the black, grey, and informal economies are developing solutions to a myriad of challenges. Far from being "deviant entrepreneurs" that pose threats to our social and economic stability, these innovators display remarkable ingenuity, pioneering original methods and practices that we can learn from and apply to move formal markets. This book investigates the stories of underground innovation that make up the Misfit Economy. It examines the teeming genius of the underground. It asks: Who are these unknown visionaries? How do they work? How do they organize themselves? How do they catalyze innovation? And ultimately, how can you take these lessons into your own world?

Book Summary:

Being a misfit does not disqualify you from a dynamic life—it prepares you for it. Matthew Barnett knows a thing or two about misfits. As founder of the Dream Center in Los Angeles, a twenty-four-hour church that ministers to thirty-five thousand hurting people a week, Barnett has seen a little of everything. Gangsters, addicts, orphans, taggers, cutters, the sick, the suffering, the hopeless—all the misfits of the world come through the Dream Center’s doors in search of hope. But when Barnett first arrived in LA, it was he who felt like the misfit. In Misfits Welcome, he shares the simple, life-changing lesson he has learned from twenty years of ministering to the forgotten: Being a misfit prepares you to do the work of the Lord. Have you found yourself in a jarring new era of life? Have your circumstances deviated drastically from your plans? Maybe you’ve felt like a misfit all your life, or maybe you’re still haunted by yesterday’s mistakes. Whatever the case, rejoice! It is at your most broken that you are most ready for what God has in store. Misfits Welcome is not just about embracing the misfits around us—it is about embracing the misfits within us and using them for the glory of God.

Book Summary:

My first book was, The Life and times of the Rich Hobo. This book: Living the Dream, is an extension of the last book. I picked the name Living the Dream. In all of my books, I say that all the time. Some days, I feel like I am living the dream. I wrote the book because I had so many stories to tell everyone, so many things I have done, places I have seen, and people I have met over the years. I am hoping and praying that my book will help people get closer to God. I get to share my experiences, strengths, and hope with my readers. I get to write about my Christian walk with God. One day at a time, how I have been in recovery for thirty-two years. There are some crazy stories. I want to tell people about God, and how He has changed my life. How God takes care of me so much. I get to write about His love and grace in my life. A lot of stories of the wacky things I have done. The miracles I have seen on the streets. Also the miracles I have seen in Church. My traveling stories, freight train hoping, street living, I want to let people know the stories of street living. Living with so much pain, off and on the streets. My mental and physical problems, I deal with daily. The things that haunt me.In my book, I want to let people know about my business and my daily struggles. How I get treated selling my wares. I also write about how many nice people have blessed me, writing about me, being a hobo at heart. I put a God story in each chapter, or I write it at the end of the chapter. I really enjoy telling and writing stories. That is what, living the dream all about. Loving what I do for a living. Getting to do what I want when I want to. Life is a vacation. I get to tell stories of the angels that are watching over me. How a man can live off of God's blessing, and his wits. Telling stories of how much I love trains, even when I lived on the streets. I told people I was living the dream. God bless you. Enjoy. See you down the road.

Book Summary:

The Long Goodbye: Dementia Diaries discusses a disease that is both personal and social for more than five million patients and their families and friends in the United States today. Now that there are medical strategies for preventing and/or curing strokes, heart attacks, even cancer, many more people are going to live into the dementia years in the near future. Although many dementia horror stories circulate in conversation and in the media, they are not the whole story. Creative approaches to loving a dementia patient can make for a valuable learning experience for family and caregivers. In The Long Goodbye Margaret Miles describes her commitment to making--rather than passively suffering--her spouse's dementia experience. Family and friends who accompany patients find embedded in the experience moments of great beauty, hilariously funny incidents, new companions, and life insights. The narrative provides both a travelogue and suggestions for a richly meaningful life passage for all participants. The Long Goodbye seeks to supply a balanced picture of a disease usually represented as unmitigated loss.
