Book Summary:

El Shaddai is the story of God and mankind, specifically of God’s choosing a particular family to abide with and form a relationship with as an example for all of mankind. It is the story of the nature, vision, and purpose of God. And it is the story of one member of this family, Jacob, far more sinner than saint, as he literally wrestled to understand what having that relationship with God would mean to him, to his people, indeed to all of humanity, and perhaps to God himself.

Book Summary:

The Hebrew name of God in the holy writings is El Shaddai. “El” means “God Creator” and “Shaddai” means “Almighty.” El Shaddai is the name of God. Although we read other names given to God in the Old Testament, none of those names are the true name of God. Names such as Lord, Yahweh, and Jehovah were never spoken or pronounced in Israel in the entire Old Testament as their god. Before the Kingdom of Judah fell, El Shaddai warns the Judeans that their false prophets have changed his name with Baal, which is the same name as Lord. “And it shall be at that day,” says El Shaddai, “that you shall call Me Ishi (my beloved) and shall call Me no more Baali (my lord). For I will take away the names of the Baalim (lords) gods out of their mouth and they shall no more be mentioned by their name.”

Book Summary:

Religion is living culture. It continues to play a role in shaping political ideologies, institutional practices, communities of interest, ways of life and social identities. Mediating Faiths brings together scholars working across a range of fields, including cultural studies, media, sociology, anthropology, cultural theory and religious studies, in order to facilitate greater understanding of recent transformations. Contributors illustrate how religion continues to be responsive to the very latest social and cultural developments in the environments in which it exists. They raise fundamental questions concerning new media and religious expression, religious youth cultures, the links between spirituality, personal development and consumer culture, and contemporary intersections of religion, identity and politics. Together the chapters demonstrate how belief in the superempirical is negotiated relative to secular concerns in the twenty-first century.

Book Summary:

From God’s mouth to the hearts of His people - this is the function of the Bible and is the reason it is called The Word of God. “The Bible applied to the heart by the Holy Spirit is the chief means by which men are built up and established in the faith, after their conversion. It is able to cleanse them, sanctify them, to instruct them in righteousness, and to furnish them thoroughly for all good works (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) J.C. Ryle. After many years of anger against God, the Lord wonderfully restored the author to Himself and laid the burden of this ministry on his heart. Every week for the past fourteen years TFTWs (Thoughts From The Word) have been sent via the internet to God’s people throughout the world. Many similar thoughts may be found at www.onhisshoulders.com. The Bible “can show you the way which leads to heaven. It can teach you everything you need to know, point out everything you need to believe, and explain everything you need to do. It can show you what you are - a sinner. It can show you what God is - perfectly holy. It can show you the great river of pardon, peace, and grace - Jesus Christ” J.C. Ryle, 1816-1900, Bishop of Liverpool, whose picture is on the front cover. The thoughts contained in this volume are published with the sincere prayer that God will use them to refresh and encourage the souls of His people.
