Book Summary:

For five years the River Medway was a second home, cruising right up to the top reaches of the river in an 18ft motor boat, but soon bigger things beckoned. Robin fell in love with a very sad looking Sheena Mackay, originally built in 1932 but now neglected and really in need of loads of tender loving care, not to mention a money tree in the back garden. But after quite a few years, Sheena Mackay was ready for the water, and the start of all the adventures. Even though I was one hundred percent behind Robins dreams of sailing away, I was positively scared to death of actually doing it. So it was with great trepidation that we were now ready to do all the short trips in anticipation of saying farewell to home for a year or two. MV SHEENA MACKAY is my book about our adventures and how I slowly overcame my sheer terror. Well, maybe not totally, but I am a lot better! All the places that we have seen, from the south east coast, along the west coast to sailing around Lands End. Then up the west coast of Britain to Scotland, with all the delights of some of the Islands, passing along the Crinan and Caledonian Canals before heading down the east coast, absolutely amazing. We received several lovely comments about the way Robin had lovingly renovated Sheena Mackay and it thrilled us when she was recognised as a Zulu Scottish Trawler. My confidence in myself has grown and I am doing things that I would never have dreamt, which includes writing this book.

Book Summary:

If there was an honour roll of bibliographies of the Malayan campaign and the Japanese occupation of Malaya, Singapore and Borneo, this work would come close to the top of the list. With over 4,000 entries, it is a formidable collection and there is no doubt that Justin Corfield's efforts will be valuable to scholars working on this important aspect of military as well as Malayan and Singapore history. Corfield has compiled a virtual treasure trove of hitherto seemingly untouched material in the form of original diaries and other unpublished personal accounts, including material not only in English and Dutch, but also in Malay and Chinese. Three indices greatly facilitate the looking up of entries.

Book Summary:

The last two decades have seen a new renaissance in Scottish literary culture in which the Scottish novel has attained new heights of maturity, confidence and challenge. The Scottish Novel since the Seventies is the first major critical assessment of the developments in Scottish fiction in this period. Ranging from the work of longer-established authors such as Robin Jenkins, Muriel Spark and William McIlvanney to the more recent experiments of Alasdair Gray, James Kelman and Janice Galloway, it provides a new critical focus on the intriguing relationship between continuity and innovation which characterises the novel's response to the complex changes in Scottish culture and society during the past twenty years. The contributors include established critics and academics as well as younger novelists and theorists. They assess the work of an extensive number of writers in the context of a correspondingly wide range of issues: gender, postmodernism, political identity, archaism and myth, and the theme of disintegration. There are also chapters on the continuing growth of the 'Glasgow novel' and film adaptations of Scottish fiction. A full bibliography of Scottish fiction since 1970 brings this unique critical account right up to date.
