Book Summary:

This comprehensive, multidisciplinary guide provides an up-to-date presentation of fertility preservation techniques with male cancer patients and other challenging conditions. Divided into four thematic sections, part one provides an overview of the pathophysiologic processes interrelating cancer and its treatment with infertility and discusses different methods of sperm preservation and fertility outcomes in cancer patients. Part two then explores male fertility preservation in various non-cancerous conditions, such as immunosuppressed, hypogonadal and transgender patients. The fundamental principles of cryobiology and sperm optimization are covered in part three, which also offers essential building blocks for scientists to develop a sperm banking service and implement high standards of practice. The final section describes the current practices of male fertility preservation along with its psychological impact on patients, and extends beyond to future innovative methods—tissue preservation, xenografting and artificial gametes—being researched and implemented in this field. Fertility preservation among cancer patients and survivors is an evolving practice, which involves focused research and timely collaboration of professionals from related fields. The Complete Guide to Male Fertility Preservation is unique and original in its design and will appeal to a larger audience of andrologists, reproductive endocrinologists, urologists, embryologists, and all other clinicians practicing reproductive medicine and oncology.

Book Summary:

The New World primates are becoming widely used in scientific and medical work in fields from anthropology to zoology, behaviour to urology. They have unique attributes for studies in cancer, infectious diseases, genetics, virology and reproduction. However, it is only now that their reproductive physiology is being clarified in any depth and this book is a first synthesis of that knowledge. The nine authors involved in this project have presented an up to date account of the major New World species used in biological and medical science. In addition to their distribution and conservation in the wild, essential biological data from laboratory studies are presented on reproductive cycles, gestation length, seasonal breeding, puberty and other factors. The major applications of these species in research are explored. Whenever possible, research workers should steer away from using endangered species in their studies. The New World monkeys used in research in any numbers are still fairly common ~n the wild, yet their greatest advantages are ~n their smalle size and high fecundity. This makes possible the establishment of self sustaining captive breeding colonies at a fraction of the time and cost necessary for the more conventional Old World laboratory primates. Consequently the drain on wild stocks need not be extensive as only breeding nuclei should be necessary.

Book Summary:

The book that you hold in your hands is the second in a series. The two titles in the series are the following: Genetic Influences on Human Fertility and Sexuality: Theoretical and Empirical Contributions from the Biological and Behavior Sciences Edited by Joseph Lee Rodgers, David C. Rowe, & Warren B. Miller Published by Kluwer Academic Press, 2000 The Biodemography of Human Reproduction and Fertility Edited by Joseph Lee Rodgers & Hans-Peter Kohler Published by Kluwer Academic Press, 2002 The series has published chapters by researchers who study human fertility, from a particular perspective: Biodemography. We welcome your interest and participation in this developing subfield. Or, perhaps, biodemography may be better referred to as a "superfield. " Because biodemography so naturally crosses interdisciplinary boundaries, and because its application draws together researchers from disparate disciplines, it may well be more appropriate to consider that biodemography subsumes a number of other disciplines, rather than the other way around. In this preface, we will describe our own efforts and those of many others to promote and develop the study of human fertility, using methods, models, and theories from both biological and demographic domains. In December, 1997, 25 participants from three different countries gathered in Tucson, Arizona for a small conference with the title "Genetic Influences on Fertility-Related Processes. " That conference represented a fascinating blending of research from two apparently separate domains.

Book Summary:

Worldwide, over 75 million people are involuntarily childless, a devastating experience for many with significant consequences for the social and psychological well-being of women in particular. Despite greater levels of infertility and strong cultural meanings attached to having children, little attention has been paid politically or academically to the needs of minority ethnic women and men. This groundbreaking volume is the first to highlight the ways in which diverse ethnic, cultural and religious identities impact upon understandings of technological solutions for infertility and associated treatment experiences within Western societies. It offers a corrective to the dominance of the narratives of hegemonic groups in infertility research. The collection begins with a discussion of fertility prevalence and access to treatment for minorities in the West and considers some of the key methodological challenges for social research on ethnicity and infertility. Drawing on primary research from the US, the UK, Eire, Germany, the Netherlands and Australia, the book then turns the spotlight onto the ways in which minority status and cultural and religious mores might impact on the experience of infertility and assisted reproductive technologies. It argues that more equitable access to culturally competent assisted conception services should be an essential component of a transformatory politics of infertility.
