Book Summary:

Of all the many things humans rely on plants for, surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate, calm, or completely alter the qualities of our mental experience. In This Is Your Mind On Plants, Michael Pollan explores three very different drugs - opium, caffeine and mescaline - and throws the fundamental strangeness of our thinking about them into sharp relief. Exploring and participating in the cultures that have grown up around these drugs, while consuming (or in the case of caffeine, trying not to consume) them, Pollan reckons with the powerful human attraction to psychoactive plants, and the equally powerful taboos. In a unique blend of history, science, memoir and reportage, Pollan shines a fresh light on a subject that is all too often treated reductively. In doing so, he proves that there is much more to say about these plants than simply debating their regulation, for when we take them into our bodies and let them change our minds, we are engaging with nature in one of the most profound ways we can. This ground-breaking and singular book holds up a mirror to our fundamental human needs and aspirations, the operations of our minds and our entanglement with the natural world.

Book Summary:

'It's as if we made entering gothic cathedrals illegal, or museums, or sunsets!' When LSD was first discovered in the 1940s, it seemed to researchers, scientists and doctors as if the world might be on the cusp of psychological revolution. It promised to shed light on the deep mysteries of consciousness, as well as offer relief to addicts and the mentally ill. But in the 1960s, with the vicious backlash against the counter-culture, all further research was banned. In recent years, however, work has quietly begun again on the amazing potential of LSD, psilocybin and DMT. Could these drugs in fact improve the lives of many people? Diving deep into this extraordinary world and putting himself forward as a guinea-pig, Michael Pollan has written a remarkable history of psychedelics and a compelling portrait of the new generation of scientists fascinated by the implications of these drugs. How to Change Your Mind is a report from what could very well be the future of human consciousness.

Book Summary:

Raoul Heinrich Francé (1874-1943) was a botanist and microbiologist. In 1907 he created the German micrological society, to make the use of the microscope popular in order to create an understanding for the theory of modern biology. After a ten-year intensive occupation with the plant he saw it as a complete harmonious organization. Francé believed that many principles of human inventions are already available and that therefore technical problems can be solved by the study and application of biological models. Thus he can be considered as a founder of biotechnology. He was also one of the first environmentalists, as early as 1924 writing that humans must arrange themselves in harmony with natural laws and cycles and said that humans can poison rivers by waste water, make air contaminated by smoke and exhaust gases, but they cannot destroy the laws of nature without being destroyed. Francé investigated the small living world in the water and in the soil and was the first to discover the importance of microorganisms for humus formation and soil fertility. Building on his knowledge of soil organisms, he developed a patented procedure for the regulated composting of organic wastes. He wrote 60 books and a multiplicity of popular-scientific articles and writings, and was publisher or editor of several magazines on microbiology and the miniature world.

Book Summary:

The idea that plants have minds can sound improbable, but some widely respected contemporary scientists and philosophers find it plausible. It turns out to be rather tricky to vindicate the presumption that plants do not have minds, for doing so requires getting clear about what plants can do and what exactly a mind is. By connecting the most compelling empirical work on plant behavior with philosophical reflection on the concept of minds, Plant Minds aims to help non-experts begin to think clearly about whether plants have minds. Relying on current consensus ideas about minds and plants, Chauncey Maher first presents the best case for thinking that plants do not have minds. Along the way, however, he unearths an idea at the root of that case, the idea that having a mind requires the capacity to represent the world. In the last chapter, he defends a relatively new and insightful theory of mind that rejects that assumption, making room for the possibility that plants do have minds, primarily because they are alive.

Book Summary:

This book summary and analysis was created for individuals who want to extract the essential contents and are too busy to go through the full version. This book is not intended to replace the original book. Instead, we highly encourage you to buy the full version. Michael Pollan wanted to research LSD and psilocybin and how it could provide relief to people suffering from conditions that are difficult to treat such as depression, addiction, and anxiety. This didn’t intend to be his most personal book but, because of how these substances could improve the lives even of the people with mental health problems, Pollan began to explore the landscape of the mind from his own experience. This began an adventure into the altered states of consciousness backed by the latest research on the brain and an underground community of psychedelic therapists. Pollan switched from historical records in order to separate the myth from the truth that have been around since the 1960s—which set a backlash against psychedelic evangelists from the originally promising field of research. A perfect blend of science, memoir, travel writing, history, and medicine, How to Change Your Mind serves as a participatory journalism that gives a gripping account of the world of understanding the mind, the self, and our place in the world. Pollan’s “mental travelogue” not only looks into psychedelic drugs but also the puzzle of the human consciousness and how it could set us in suffering and in joy—while doing our best of find the meaning in our lives. Book Summary:

Our minds, our emotions, our relationships, and our bodies are out of kilter. We know it, but we tend to ignore it until something brings us up short-a worrying diagnosis, a broken relationship, or simply an inability to function harmoniously in everyday life. When things are a little off, we read a self-help book. When they're really bad, we bring in oncologists to address cancer, neurologists to repair the brain, psychologists to help us understand our family of origin. This fragmented approach to health is merely a stopgap. To truly heal, we need to return to the original recipe for wellness discovered by shamans millennia ago. Drawing on more than 25 years of experience as a medical anthropologist-as well as his own journey back from the edge of death-acclaimed shamanic teacher Alberto Villoldo shows you how to detoxify the brain and gut with superfoods; use techniques for working with our luminous energy fields to heal your body; and follow the ancient path of the medicine wheel to shed disempowering stories from the past and pave the way for rebirth. Using the principles and practices in this book, you can feel better in a few days, begin to clear your mind and heal your brain in a week, and in six weeks be on your way to growing a new body-one that heals rapidly, retains its youthful vitality, and keeps you connected to Spirit, to the earth, and to a renewed sense of purpose in your life.
