Book Summary:

48 activities that explore emotional issues through drawing. For many children, drawing is a more pleasurable activity than writing. These activities and worksheets use drawing as the basis for exploring emotional issues and promoting children's emotional literacy. The book is intended for anyone who spends time with children, including teachers, learning mentors, therapists and parents. It is organised in three sections: Self-esteem - The activities in this section promote a positive sense of self by helping children to identify their strengths and preferences, their achievements and aspirations, the people and things they value. Many of the activities creatively explore a sense of personal power, something that children of this age have little opportunity to do. Understanding this concept helps them to take responsibility for their emotions and actions. Emotions - In this section children identify and define a wide range of feelings, expanding their emotional vocabulary beyond the basic 'happy', 'sad' or 'angry'. More complex feelings such as jealousy, pride and embarrassment are examined, and children are encouraged to define these feelings in both words and drawings, and through personal experience. When children understand what causes strong emotional reactions, they are better able to manage their feelings in an appropriate way. Empathy - These activities encourage children to consider other people's feelings and preferences, and to think from different perspectives. Some offer specific viewpoints to focus on such as an old lady, a baby or an alien. Others promote empathetic skills such as listening. For each activity the instructions include a clearly stated aim, a suggested outline of how to conduct the activity and two optional follow-on ideas. Flexibility is central to the design: the activities can stand alone or be incorporated into an emotional literacy programme. The finished drawings can be displayed or kept by children as a visual reminder of their learning. Includes free CD Rom containing the whole book in colour. Age: 4-11.

Book Summary:

An art collector who was a patient at the Amsterdam Medical Center once expressed his gratitude with a donation of several works of art, the seed for the extraordinary modern art collection that now flourishes at the Amsterdam Medical Center. Since it began seriously cultivating its art collection in the 1980s, the Center has amassed approximately 5,000 works by Dutch and Dutch-resident artists. The Amsterdam Medical Center Art Book is an extraordinary showcase of the Center’s rich and diverse collection, which focuses on Dutch art from the 1950s through the 1970s. The book highlights several stunning examples within the collection of such benchmark art movements as CoBrA, Mixed Media Art, Zero Art, and New Figuration. Other fascinating pieces featured in the book were created by artists-in-residence, who were allowed to draw from live scenes in the Center’s operating theater and maternity ward. This volume ultimately presents a fascinating survey of Dutch post-war art, with over 100 vibrant color illustrations that include works by Eugene Brands, Karel Appel, Constant, Marc Mulders, Roy Villevoye, and Marlene Dumas.

Book Summary:

Phaedra Black is having a rough year. Her marriage fell apart, she lost her license to practice clinical psychology, and she was fired from her job at the hospital in her home town of Dismal, Alabama. But those are the easy problems. Phae is also a witch, one with a prophesy hanging over head. A prophesy that claims her as the Phoenix, the most powerful magical force in the world. And the most destructive. Phae only trusts two people—her best friend Diane and her boyfriend Frederick Navarre. Diane is an oracle, when she’s not working twelve-hour shifts at the hospital. Fred is a warlock and Phae’s touchstone and teacher. Without him, Phae feels completely lost. The trouble comes when Fred leaves to go on some unknown quest. He doesn’t tell her anything except to avoid magic at all costs. Easier said than done. Phae’s new job as a counselor at a methadone clinic is exhausting, pointless, and pays peanuts. Her boss and co-workers are miserable, rude, self-centered people who should be in rehab themselves instead of helping addicts, and her beautifully restored plantation house, the Black Magnolia, put her in the red. With her bills piling up, Phae is at her wits end. Not even Diane, who’s moved in with her, can help. She has no choice but to use her magic, sparking a chain of events that takes her down a road of no return. Her power begins seeping out into the world and no matter what she does, she can’t control it. When she gives her boorish boss a tail and turns the condescending clinic doctor into a tin of coffee, Phae realizes the immense force she has inside her will continue to grow and leave a trail of doom behind her. Worst of all she finds out that The Guild of Witches wants her dead and it has nothing to do with not paying her annual dues. In desperation, Phae turns to an ancient demon who promises to help her. She accepts, but his assistance comes with a steep price and consequences bigger and more catastrophic than Phae could ever imagine. With no choice left to her, Phae has to undo what she’s unwittingly set in motion, or she could lose everything and everyone she loves.
